This week we break down the Masshoff tuning method and cover the pros and cons associated with this approach. As usual, our drum is the faithful Ludwig LM400 70’s Supraphonic 10-lug with triple flange hoops. Batter head is an Evans UV1, snare side is an Evans Snare Side 300, and the wires are Puresound Custom Pro Steel 20-strand mounted with string. It’s worth mentioning that the wires on the drum that Udo uses to demonstrate this method are 42-strand, which tremendously alters the behavior of the drum. We opted for a more pedestrian 20-strand set, as there’s a good chance that these are far closer to what you have on your drum.
