19-yo pilot Zara Rutherford begins bid to break round the world flight record

The Britsh-Belgian pilot Zara Rutherford has started on Wednesday an around the world trip in a light aircraft from the airport of Kortrijk-Wevelgem in Belgium. The 19 years old pilot has set herself the target of flying around the globe and setting a record as the youngest female pilot to achieve the feat.

“I think the biggest challenge for me partly will be the transatlantic coming in a few days. It is more of a mental thing. It is one of the big challenges in aviation to pass solo transatlantic”, said Rutherford at a media conference at the Kortrijk Airport.

“She is going to hopefully show millions of women and young girls around the world, they can also do, whatever they want to do,” commented her father on the tarmak.

On her route around the globe she will touch down in 52 countries and will be flying approximately 250 hours.

If successful she would be the youngest female pilot to achieve this mark. Travis Ludlow is considered to be the youngest male pilot to achieve this with 18 years at the time.
