22 Killed as Military Transport Plane Crashes in Eastern Ukraine

At least 22 people died when a military plane crashed near Kharkiv in the northeast of Ukraine overnight.

Many of those on board were cadets studying at the Kharkiv Air Force University.

Footage of the crash released by officials on social media showed the smouldering remains of the Antonov An-26 transport plane.

The aircraft burst into flames as it attempted to land at a military in Chuhuiv.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky described the crash as a “terrible tragedy” and said he would travel to the Kharkiv region on Saturday.

The town of Chuhuiv is around 30 km southeast of Kharkiv and 100 km west of the front line where government forces are fighting pro-Russian separatists.
