A strong underwater earthquake has caused panic in Indonesia. A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake shook eastern Indonesia, triggering a tsunami alert and forcing people to flee their homes in panic. According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 18.5 kilometers underwater. Its epicenter was located 112 kilometers north of the city of Maumere, the second largest island in the province of East Nusa Tenggara. Video provided by the administration of Eastern Governor Nusa Tenggar shows people shouting in the street and the ground shaking. Another video from the same source showed a slight increase in water levels in one coastal region of the province, but no major tsunamis were reported. The Indonesian Disaster Management Agency said one person was injured in Mangarai on the island of Flores, and a school building and several houses on the island of Selayar in South Sulawesi were damaged. The agency said it was still assessing the effects of the quake. According to the meteorological agency, after the earthquake caused by an active fault in the Flores Sea, there were at least 15 aftershocks with the largest recorded magnitude of 5.6.
