More than 40 million people from Texas to West Virginia are on a winter weather alert as the system threatens heavy rainfall, significant icing and severe frosts, with roads set to be treacherous and rapid frostbite possible in places.
Icing is expected in at least 15 states, the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center said.

“The total amount of freezing rain could become significant in parts of central Texas, southwestern Oklahoma, central Arkansas and western Tennessee, where more than a quarter of an inch of ice is forecast to build up. In addition, parts of central Texas and Arkansas have a low to moderate chance of more than half an inch of icing for three days,” the center said in a statement.

Winter precipitation will come in several waves across the region throughout Wednesday, and while there may be breaks in active weather, roads will remain slippery throughout the event as temperatures remain subdued.
Dangerously cold air also sank behind the Arctic front as it moved slowly across the west over the weekend, and more than 15 million people were hit with cold wind warnings Monday morning.

Temperatures down to 45 degrees below zero are possible. The coldest wind can cause frostbite in just 10 minutes.
