For two weeks, the National Geographic Society Marine Mammal team worked with Ocean Exploration Trust aboard E/V Nautilus to build on decades of scientific studies and centuries of Indigenous knowledge about marine mammals in the Hawaiian Islands. As part of the From Shore to the Abyss partnership program, the team tested new technology to study cetacean vocalization in the waters of Maui, Lanai, and Hawai’i Island while creating educational resources to foster the explorer mindset and scientific inquiry in the next generation of marine mammal researchers.
