Flights attendants and crew members were seen brushing up on their fighting skills at the Federal Air Marshal Service Field office in Detroit. The initiative comes as clashes with unruly passengers have recently increased, as seen on Wednesday.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) started offering self defence classes to flight attendants and pilots as the industry faces a swell in cases of violent behaviour on flights.

“The things that are happening in the industry today, people, you know, with the COVID situation, people are just getting worn out and just really volatile out there, just a total disrespect,” stated flight attendant Redmond Lacy.

Federal air marshals demonstrated different techniques, including how to rotate wrists and use their elbows when punching and body leverage to push away an attacker and break free from an attacker’s hold.

“During this year, there is an increase in this sort of disturbances on planes; unruly passengers, and I think flight attendants just want to have as many tools as they can do to their job and protect themselves,” explained TSA Public Affairs specialist Jessica Mayle.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) documented over 3,000 reports of disruptive passengers on flights so far this year, with 2,867 of the reported cases linked to passengers refusing to comply with the facemask mandate.
