Afghan security forces were seen enforcing a curfew newly instated by the government in a bid to hinder Taliban infiltration, on Sunday evening, in Mazar-i-Sharif.

According to local police, the curfew is in effect for all residents unless special permission is allowed, primarily in emergencies.

The curfew is set to last a month and applies to almost all the country, barring the capital and two other provinces, with movement banned between 22:00 and 04:00 local time (17:30 to 23:30 GMT).

The planned withdrawal of all US troops from Afghanistan by the end of August has left many regions facing being overrun by the Taliban.

The insurgents have made substantial gains, reportedly taking control of several key border crossings around the country, with the group recently claiming that they had seized 85 percent of the country.
