Afghanistan: Anti-Taliban protesters take to Kabul streets on Afghan Independence Day

Hundreds of people took to the streets of Kabul for an annual celebration of the Afghan Independence Day on Thursday, denouncing the Taliban takeover of the country. Protesters carried giant Afghan flags as they marched through the roads and streets of the city, chanting slogans.

“We want to keep raising our flag again, we don’t want to go 20 years back,” protester Farzana said.
“Unfortunately they used force against us and broke our smart phones and they told us that ‘you cannot raise you flag,’ they told us ‘go and sit at home, you are women and be shameful,’” she added.
The Afghan flag has become a symbol of defiance after the Taliban takeover of the country.

The Taliban took over the capital last week after a swift advance amid the withdrawal of the US and NATO troops from the country.

SOT, Farzana, Protester (Dari): “It’s because of our national flag, and are here because we want to keep raising our flag again, we don’t want to go 20 years back, as we struggled during those 20 years, our elders have been struggling, our family members struggled as well, so we cannot just sit at home, or at least, being able to ask for my rights.”

SOT, Farzana, Protester (Dari): “Unfortunately they used force against us and broke our smart phones and they told us that ‘you cannot raise you flag,’ they told us ‘go and sit at home, you are women and be shameful,’ they told men to ‘wear a scarf as you bring your women here.’”

SOT, Protester: “This flag is not a piece of mud, this is a piece of our hearts, no one can take it from us, this is our pride, and long live Afghanistan.”

SOT, Husna Yousufi, Protester (Dari): “Today we came to raise our flag on the hill of Wazir Akbar Khan, but unfortunately they didn’t allow us, and we were forced to protest against them to show the world that the (Taliban) government does not have any value not just for us even it has no legitimation for the world.”
