Afghanistan: At least 5 killed, 12 wounded after mortar attack in Zabul province

Wounded civilians could be seen receiving medical treatment at the Zabul Hospital, in Qalat after a mortar round landed in a neighbourhood in the city killing at least five people and injuring 12, on Thursday.

Three women and two children were among the victims. The incident was reportedly caused by clashes between government forces and Taliban fighters. The wounded civilians are currently treated at a local hospital.

“Around 11:00 PM (18:30 GMT) at least 11 wounded were transferred to the Zabul provincial hospital,” said Dr Nazair Harifal, head of Zabul provincial hospital. “All the wounded people received medical treatment and three of them were successfully operated and will be healthy,” he added.

“The wounded are my cousin and brothers, they are all the people of the villages, the mortar arrived and landed in our village that killed at least 5 people, and wounded our members,” a man at the hospital told.

“It was evening time I was sitting with my friends and it was our gathering place. The mortar landed and hit our house which did kill many of my family members and some others were wounded, and they are hospitalised here,” Abdul Hanan, a wounded man in the attack said.

Local police blamed Taliban fighters for the mortar attack, which the group has yet to confirm.

Clashes between the Afghan army and Taliban forces have been ongoing the last three months after international troops started to withdraw their forces from the country. Taliban already seized large territories and took control of key border crossings to neighbouring countries like Pakistan.
