Afghanistan: Body of deceased Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Danish Siddiqui moved to Kandahar

The body of Indian Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Danish Siddiqui, who was killed on an assignment in southern Afghanistan, was transported to a local hospital in Kandahar on Friday.

Siddiqui’s body was seen being transported to the hospital in an open coffin, with his press vest later being placed on top of it.

According to reports, the 41-year-old, who was the chief photographer for Reuters India, had been allegedly ambushed by Taliban militants near a border post with Pakistan.

Siddiqui had worked for Reuters for more than a decade, winning the 2018 Pulitzer Prize in feature photography for his work documenting violence against Myanmar’s Rohingya minority group.

SOT, Mohammadyar Majroh, Afghan journalist (Pashto): “It is very sad that I am participating in the funeral ceremony of the one who is a journalist, martyred Danish was a Muslim journalist and he was killed during security operations. It is very sad news that journalists don’t have any other support, his weapons are mic and camera, we have lost a lot of journalists this year, we lost Naimat Rawan and we lost Danish, like this we lost in Helmand, Kandahar and in all edges of Afghanistan journalists lives are in danger. We generally demand from the government or from both sides to care for journalists lives, please don’t make problems for journalists, they must let journalists convey the message of the people as much as thay can.”

SOT, Dr. Dawood Farhad, Head of Mirwais Hospital (Pashto): “Last night around 20:30 we received three dead bodies, among them there was an Indian journalist too. He was put in the morgue, by the person who is responsible for the morgue and after his relatives did his discharge process, we saved him in the icebox, his body is to be moved by his relatives after confirmation of the responsibles.”
