Afghanistan: Crowds gather at airport in hope to leave Kabul as Taliban sweep into capital

Crowds were seen gathered at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, hoping to leave Afghanistan as the Taliban swept into the capital, Sunday.

Some were seen trying to scale walls and fences to get onto the airport tarmac, with the US military Humvees seen arriving in the area.

Earlier in the day, the Taliban fighters were spotted in Kabul streets following the collapse of the government, as country’s President Ashraf Ghani abandoned the presidential palace, which was then taken by the Taliban fighters, and left the country.

On the same day planes and helicopters were seen flying over Kabul as the US and allies raced to evacuate foreign diplomats following the Taliban’s advancement. The Taliban offensive follows the US and other NATO forces’ ongoing withdrawal.
