Government forces and the Taliban clashed in the town of Qala-e-Naw, in Badghis province, on Monday, causing devastation to residents and their livelihoods.
The governor of Badghis, Hesamuddin Shams, said the security forces fought Taliban fighters who attacked the city. The Taliban have yet to confirm the attack.
Shops in the Qala-e-Naw market were destroyed after a fire swept through the area. Social media users have claimed the fire was caused by the Taliban. Residents are now in desperate need of essentials goods, such as food and water.
“There is no food in the bakeries, no meat in the shops. The city was burnt, all the people are ruined and suffering miserably. Our kids and women are hungry and thirsty. We could not find any water, we don’t have water,” said Habibullah, a resident.
“My whole life is burnt. There is no food to eat and no water to drink. No one can walk around, the Taliban are around here. The people of the village are ruined and have been destroyed,” added Abdullah, another local.
The departure of foreign troops and the advance of the Taliban is contributing to mounting political and economic insecurity in the country.
On Friday, the Taliban claimed to have already seized control of 85 percent of Afghanistan. The Afghan government denies this, with the Ministry of Defence announcing on Monday that it sent a large number of special commandos to the province to provide assistance.
