Afghanistan: Khost radio station continues broadcast despite Taliban takeover

Despite the Taliban taking complete control of the country last week, local Afghan radio stations decided to continue to broadcast music and entertainment programs in Khost, Afghanistan.

According to the staff of Zhmand Radio and Hawa Radio, so far there has been no interference with their broadcasting from the Taliban and they were able to continue their work as usual.

In other parts of the country, radio stations and TV networks have shut down their broadcasting services or changed their programs according to new policies under the Taliban regime.

These include banning female journalists, entertainment programs and music shows.

We think that the media could face any broadcasting policy as their broadcasting policy is unknown yet. But thank God, in the Khost province, as many media which are active now, they were active before also, and as before they continue their programs, and their publishing is ongoing in a normal state. As you’ve seen, our programs, our entertainment programs, and our music are ongoing. It’s broadcasting the same way as before. We had contact with the responsible. Their demand is that you keep your broadcasting as normal, although the local media observed broadcasting standards before also, and we promote our broadcasting regarding the standards. We have 18 hours of broadcasting and it continues without any pause. And even on the day that there was the issue of takeover or during changing governments in Khost, I was here and our broadcasting was ongoing as usual and no pause took place on our broadcasting yet.”

SOT, Rafiullah Zameer, Publishing manager at Zhmand Radio (Pashto): “As the Taliban took over Afghanistan, the private publishing media, even radios or TVs, have shut down their publishing. But I have to say, fortunately, in the Khost province, the publishing is still continuing and even on the first day of the Taliban takeover, some radios kept their publishing ongoing, and those radios and TVs who had feared the Taliban, who think that they will face any reaction by publishing music, or they think that they will face any concern by publishing any entertainment program, and no one has interfered directly yet. We also publish music and our programs are ongoing as usual. A problem we have is that by now there is no media with whom we share our problems if something urgent or sudden is happening.”

SOT, Shir Mohammad, Khost resident (Pashto): “In Khost the media actually do good activities. The music that was broadcasting before, it has the same publishing, and they publish the same music as before. We demand that they let media be free so that they can broadcast like before when they had broadcasting.”
