Afghanistan: Local militias assist Afghan forces against Taliban amid US withdrawal

Members of various local militias were seen taking to their stations in Sorubay, Nangarhar Province, on Monday, in response to Afghan Vice-President Sarwar Danish's call to assist Afghan forces against the Taliban.

Militia members could be seen preparing their weapons and manning an outpost on top of a hill.

As the US begins to the full withdrawal of its ground troops from Afghanistan, Taliban forces have reportedly gained ground near the country's border regions. In response to the Afghan army's overwhelmed forces, Danish called on various armed militias to assist in holding back the Taliban, some of whom answered the call.

SOT, Saidullah, Local Member of Militia (Pashto): "The current situation is very bad in the country, but fortunately our area is not so bad. We are young, always ready to defend our country even in the middle of the night too."

SOT, Saz Noor Shinwari, Local Member of Militia (Pashto): "As US forces left, they handed over their bases to Afghan forces. Only formal or registered colleagues were in their positions before and were fighting, but now with the withdrawal of US forces most of our villagers have joined us to protect our areas."

SOT, Zarqilab Shinwari, Local Member of Militia (Pashto): "When there was fighting between Afghan government, Taliban and IS, we got up with weapons as local uprising forces, then we started fighting with enemies and still we are fighting here."
