Kabul mayor Mohammad Daoud Sultanzoy spoke to RT on Friday about the prospects of a Taliban government and possible consequences of the recent takeover by the group.

“As a population that consists of 50% of women, we cannot afford, economically, nor socially nor logically to put them aside and put them on the sidelines. We have educated women, we have women who can provide services we have women who can be part of the economy, both rural and urban,” said Sultanzoy referring to concerns about women’s rights under the Taliban.

The official said the group told him to continue his work as mayor following the takeover.

Sultanzoy added that life was seemingly going back to normal with some areas like the airport or embassies being ‘the subject of a lot of confusion and hysteria’.

“Other than that things are normal in the streets and in the markets. And next week, things will probably change further, because the roads will open up, the borders will open up, and those will affect the prices and the market will move back towards normal, that’s the expectation,” added Sultanzoy.

Support for Taliban, resentment of how things were managed, and also the inadequate process of command and control at the higher echelons of security management of the country and dissatisfaction among racking rank and file the military security forces to not to fight because they didn’t want to fight for something unknown. Everything was defined around individuals rather than systems, and therefore, the motivation to fight for a person or persons was not enough for the people to fight, therefore, there was no bloodshed, thank God.”

SOT, Mohammad Daoud Sultanzoy, Kabul Mayor: “I think the issue of women, has to be dealt with in the context of human rights, and Islam, of course. And as a population that it consists of 50% of women, we cannot afford, economically, nor socially nor logically to put them aside and put them on the sidelines. We have educated women, we have women who can provide services we have women who can be part of the economy, both rural and urban. Therefore, it’s only logical for a Taliban government, or for any government to make sure that we take advantage of that and not put this element of society at idle, we cannot afford to do that economically and politically.”
