Afghanistan: Taliban replace Women's Affairs Ministry with religious policing body

Taliban authorities have closed down the Women’s Affairs Ministry in Kabul and repurposed the function of the building, as seen on Saturday.

The Women’s Affairs Ministry was replaced with the Ministry of Propagation of Islamic Virtue and the Prevention of Vice on Friday, with the front building sign being replaced.

“My thoughts regarding the Taliban is that they have not changed their behaviours, but also in today’s era they are rolling in their former 1990-era ideology in Afghanistan but the people of Afghanistan have been changed,” commented Sawar, a Kabul resident.

“We exist to fight for our future: our future is peace, our future is equality, and our future is all-involved justice,” added Sawar.

The religious ministry has previously existed in Taliban controlled areas of Afghanistan during the 1990s and placed restrictions on women’s rights in the country.

Taliban forces seized control of Afghanistan on August 15 and initially promised inclusiveness and amnesty for general opponents.

The interim government announced on September 7 included no women and Taliban figures that have been accused of attacking US forces for the last 20 years.
