Afghanistan: US jet deploys countermeasures as it lands in Kabul

A US C-17 military jet deployed countermeasure flares as it came in to land in Kabul on Monday, one day ahead of the US’s withdrawal deadline.

The cautious landing came after several rockets fired at the airport were intercepted by a US anti-missile system earlier in the morning, as could be seen in footage published by Ruptly (https://ruptly.tv/videos/20210830-020.)

No casualties were reported in the wake of the attack, which was claimed by the so-called Islamic State’s (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) Afghan offshoot, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – Khorasan Province (ISIS-K).

US President Joe Biden has vowed to continue evacuations up to his August 31 withdrawal deadline despite Thursday’s suicide attack near Kabul airport by ISIS-K, which killed at least 182 people, including 13 US military personnel and 169 Afghan civilians.
