Afghanistan: Women protest in Kabul against Taliban restrictions

Several dozen Afghan women and activists took to the streets of Kabul on Tuesday to oppose the Taliban restrictions on women’s freedoms.
The protesters held signs and chanted as they marched through the streets.
One commented on the need for the international community to pay attention: “If one of our members is harmed, the international community should ask the Islamic Emirate for a response. Women disappeared in Mazar-i-Sharif and no one even heard their voice. But we do not want to be one of those people, to lose our lives and no country to hear our voice.”
The Taliban issued new travel restrictions for Afghanistan on Sunday for women, including a ban on long distance road trips without a male relative. Rules also say women should be refused rides if they are not wearing hijabs.
The Taliban has continued to place restrictions on women’s rights and freedoms in Afghanistan, despite this being a key condition for global donors in restoring aid to the country, which is facing an acute hunger crisis this winter.

Today, after we are threatened by the Taliban (Taliban intelligence), we play with our lives and take to the streets. If one of our members is harmed, the international community should ask the Islamic Emirate for a response. Women disappeared in Mazar-i-Sharif and no one even heard their voice. But we do not want to be one of those people, to lose our lives and no country to hear our voice.”

SOT, Afghan protester, (Dari): “This oppression is not acceptable to us. We fight as long as we live. We are women fighters. They [the Taliban] have no right to make our lives hell at all.”
