The leaders of Serbia, Albania and North Macedonia signed free movement of trade, people, and services agreements on Tuesday, as part of the Open Balkans ‘Mini-Schengen’ initiative.
Prime Ministers Edi Rama of Albania, Zoran Zaev of North Macedonia, and President Aleksandar Vucic of Serbia could be seen signing the agreements after they met in Tirana for the two-days-long Open Balkan Summit.
The initiative seeks to establish a borderless zone, with free trade and movement from the start of 2022.
Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo rejected the initiative whilst Serbia refuses to recognise Kosovo as an independent state. The countries also fear that joining may hinder their applications to join the EU bloc.
