Algeria: Amazigh New Year celebrated in Ammal

Members of the Imazighen community could be seen in Ammal celebrating the first day of the Amazigh New Year, also known as Yennayer, on Wednesday.

Imazighen, the plural of Amazigh, is the Tamazight language term for the Indigenous peoples of North Africa, many of whom reject the commonly used term ‘berber’ as derogatory.

Vendors took to the streets to sell clothes, jewellery, and other fine goods, whilst hundreds gathered in the town square to celebrate the beginning of the new year.

According to the Amazigh calendar, this year will be the year 2972. Yennayer, the first month of the Amazigh year, marks the period in which Shoshenq I took the throne as Pharaoh of Egypt. Its first day corresponds to the first day of January in the Julian calendar.

SOT, Ait Mayhoun Belkacem, Visitor (Arabic): “They come from everywhere in Algeria, from Boumerdes, Tizi Ouzou and Bouira. As you can see we have created a brotherly atmosphere. There are many people who have not seen each other for 10 years, and they are meeting here. We also revived the Amazigh heritage. In the past, people used to celebrate Yennayer in their homes only, while now they celebrate openly.”

SOT, Hamza El Aaj, Photographer (Arabic): “We come every year to celebrate Yennayer. We see a lot of customs, traditions and heritage, which is a nice thing. We also see people coming from all the provinces of the country.”

SOT, Organiser (Arabic): “Happy 2972 Amazigh year. Today we celebrated the Yennayer festival. We hope that it will be a year full of goodness and blessings. We welcome all the attendees who came to revive this heritage.”

SOT, Attendee (Arabic): “The most important thing that prompted me to attend today is this Amazigh cultural event. As an Amazigh, I have had a desire for a long time to revive this heritage.”
