Algeria: Fmr pres Bouteflika laid to rest in Alia cemetery in Algiers

Former Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika was laid to rest in the capital’s El Alia Cemetery on Sunday.

The coffin of the former president was seen being carried on a trailer pulled by a military vehicle that passed through in front of the mourners.

The Algerian News Agency said that the state funeral was attended by current President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, along with other high-ranking officials, in addition to members of the late president’s family.

Bouteflika was buried in the martyrs section of the capital’s main cemetery, which is already the final resting place of significant figures and martyrs of the Algerian War for Independence.

The former president died at the age of 84 on Friday after ruling the country between 1999 - 2019.

Bouteflika, who lived his final days out of the spotlight, stepped down from office as a result of mass popular protests that broke out after he announced that he would seek a fifth term as president.

TRANSLATIONS:

SOT, Mourner (Arabic): “We thank our president, he is still in our hearts and we still love him. The programme of our president (Bouteflika) is still ongoing until today. We thank him because he built Algeria and he made a great journey for Algeria.”

SOT, Mohammed, Mourner (Arabic): “Bouteflika ruled like all the previous presidents and like those who will come. He was president, we came to attend his funeral, as we did for the former presidents, Chadli Bendjedid or Houari Boumediene.”

SOT, Djamel, Mourner (Arabic); “I came from the town of Relizane to attend the funeral of President Bouteflika. Current President Abdelmadjid Tebboune is being asked to take care of the youth because we are out of work.”
