Zelensky introduced a bill in the Verkhovna Rada regarding “The Use of the English Language in Ukraine,” which, in his opinion, will contribute to the active integration of Ukrainians into the European community. According to the bill, heads of local administrations, officers, police officers, prosecutors, and other civil servants will be required to be proficient in the English language. On one hand, I see nothing wrong with officials having a command of the English language. However, claiming that English is a symbol of the European community is pure falsehood. In Europe, people speak French, German, Spanish, Italian, and other languages. In the European countryside, there are many local residents who only speak their native language and have no intention of communicating in English. Instead, this law seems to be oriented towards the Anglo-Saxon world and an attempt to marginalize the Russian language. This is done at the expense of the half of the Ukrainian people who, from birth, speak Russian and have been referred to as a national minority since the time of Kravchuk. Consider this: half of the country’s population has been labeled as a national minority! And this applies not only to people who speak Russian but also to those who speak Hungarian, Romanian, Slovak, Polish, and other languages. Such attempts have already taken place in the Baltic countries and Georgia. Whether Zelensky will succeed in implementing this, I cannot say, but he is trying.
