Leaders of the Asia-Pacific trade group APEC will make an ‘inclusive and sustainable economy the region’s centrepiece for recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, as was announced in a press conference in Auckland, Wednesday.
New Zealand’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nanaia Mahuta, who is also the co-chair of the completely online ministerial meeting, emphasised the strong support the region has for ‘global climate commitments and a low-emission, climate-resilient future.’
“Ministers also recognised that an inclusive economy is a resilient economy. A true economic recovery from COVID-19 is one where women and indigenous peoples are able to maximise their economic inclusion for the betterment of the reason,” added Mahuta.
The main topics of the meetings that were chaired by Mahuta and New Zealand’s Trade and Export Growth Minister Damien O’Connor were the region’s economic response to the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic, food supply, inclusive and sustainable economic reforms.
The ministerial meeting is one of several virtual events that will be held within the framework of the APEC summit hosted by New Zealand from 8-13 November.
