As a result of the flooding in China, at least 112 people went missing, and hundreds of thousands were evacuated.

According to the media, flash floods in southwest and northwest China have already killed at least a dozen people and damaged hundreds of thousands more.

A state news agency said that in the southwestern province of Sichuan, at least six people have died, and 40 more are missing in flooding caused by heavy rain.

The report says that about 130,000 people were evacuated.

Meanwhile, the state broadcaster said that in the city of Longnan in northwestern Gansu province, six more deaths were reported, and 30,000 people were evacuated. Precipitation for a day and a half was 100 mm in the most affected areas, nearly double the July average.

The rains come amid heatwaves in parts of the country, including the eastern province of Zhejiang and the city of Shanghai, where temperatures reached 42°C last week.

Heatwaves are expected to return this week in many parts of China and last until the end of the month, a state forecaster said. Temperatures of 42°C are expected in the southern region, including Jiangxi, Zhejiang, and Fujian provinces.

Experts say such extreme weather events are becoming more likely due to climate change. Warmer air can hold more water, resulting in more heavy downpours when it is released.

Flooding exacerbates economic problems that limit travel and disrupt supply chains.

China is not the only country experiencing extreme weather. Firefighters in Portugal, Spain, France, Greece, and Morocco are battling wildfires raging across tens of thousands of hectares as this week’s heat wave continues to bring extreme temperatures across southwestern Europe.
