The large number of storms that followed each other in rapid succession across the country were responsible for the high costs, rather than isolated and localized incidents as in other years, the institute said.
“The wet and stormy summer has clearly had an impact on the cost of damage caused by floods and landslides,” the statement said.

Floods, landslides and rockfalls across Switzerland lcaused an estimated 450 million Swiss francs ($466 million) in damage.

Federal Institute of Forest, Snow and Landscape Research

said the spending was well above the 50-year average of 300 million Swiss francs for the first time since

severe thunderstorms with flooding were typical, as well as persistent rainfall that caused many rivers and lakes to rise above the full mark.
However, there are no hail and storm losses in the institute’s database.

The Swiss Insurance Association estimates that the total cost of natural disasters will be around 2.2 billion Swiss francs.
