Former Bolivian President Evo Morales discussed the 2019 political crisis and his country leading to his exile in Mexico and Argentina at an exhibition for the book ‘Evo: Operacion Rescate’ (Evo: Operation Rescue) at the Mexican embassy in Buenos Aires, on Thursday.
“To save our process of change, I must save my life, and it has made me think because until that moment, death was patriotic for me,” he said of his decision to resign.
Morales described the crisis leading to his resignation as a ‘coup’, saying, “it is a coup against the indigenous, of the United States against social movements, they do not accept that the social movements at the head of indigenous movements can lead a democratic cultural, programmatic ideological transformation.”
Current and former heads of state including Argentine President Alberto Fernandez, former Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa and former Bolivian Vice President Alvaro Garcia Linera were also present at the event.
“When freedom is at stake, the rights of men and women, human rights, there is no possible debate, you can only be on the only side,” said Fernandez of his decision to support Morales and grant him refugee status in Argentina.
He added, “I feel that Alberto Fernandez and Manuel Lopez Obrador did not save him, we were instruments of the will of a people that took care of him and helped him to get out.”
The book, written by Alfredo Serrano Mancilla, recounts the events during the year between Morales’ resignation in 2019 to his return to Bolivia after Luis Arce was elected in 2020.

SOT, Evo Morales, Former Bolivian President, (Spanish): “I summarised this coup. SOT, Evo Morales, Former Bolivian President, (Spanish): “To save our process of change, I must save my life, and it has made me think because until that moment, death was patriotic for me.”

SOT, Alberto Fernandez, President of Argentina (Spanish): “It is evident what was the responsibility of the OAS in that result, and it is pathetic that the Secretary General of the OAS is still who was the one who did that.”

SOT, Alberto Fernandez, President of Argentina (Spanish): “I feel that Alberto Fernandez and Manuel Lopez Obrador did not save him, we were instruments of the will of a people that took care of him and helped him to get out.”

SOT, Alberto Fernandez, President of Argentina (Spanish): “When freedom is at stake, the rights of men and women, human rights, there is no possible debate, you can only be on the only side, on the side of justice. Read this book, it is wonderful to tell a moment that arrives that Evo be with us and that Bolivia is governed by worthy people.”

SOT, Alvaro Garcia Linera, Former Bolivian Vice President (Spanish): “It is a book that summarises a moment of evil, and a moment of goodness, at the moment of evil is the intention to kill Evo, there was a coup in Bolivia with the intention of going to kill Evo, and the moment of goodness was there to save Evo, and around these two axes an article geopolitics. “

SOT, Alfredo Serrano Mancilla, writer of ‘Operacion Rescate’ (Spanish): “And Evo Morales said from minute zero, two weeks after the coup d’etat, burning the house of his sister, him, his family, Nazism in the 21st century, Evo I said at Christmas I am already back in Bolivia eating tambaqui, that is a fish that he loves and we all love, Alvaro and I looked at him. How crazy you are, and we were crazy. He was wrong for months but he was not wrong on the horizon. “
