Extinction Rebellion and other activists rallied against the government’s negotiations with China on setting up giant pig farms outside Beijing’s embassy in Buenos Aires on Wednesday.
Protesters could be seen wearing pig masks and waving signs decrying the potential deal, which they say would lead to increased deforestation, accelerate climate change, and spread disease.
Extinction Rebellion activist Flavia Broffoni said that the agreement would be a ‘model of absolute cruelty,’ warning that the drive to make the mega farms as productive as possible would lead to “antimicrobial resistance, that is, new bacteria and new viruses with zoonotic potential.”
The deal, which the Fernandez government has been discussing with China since 2020, would see over 20 giant pig farms set up across Argentina producing 900,000 tons of pork for export to the Asian giant within four years.
China is the world’s largest consumer of pork, with consumption continuing to rise while the spread of African swine fever in the country has fought the culling of millions of pigs.

SOT, Flavia Broffoni, Extinction Rebellion activist (Spanish): “The little that we know because our central claim is to have the conditions of the agreement. They tell us that it does not exist. We make requests for public information and they tell us that we ask another ministry. If we ask the Foreign Ministry they say that we ask agriculture and we should ask agriculture. We asked about production. What we do know is what the Ministry of Agriculture presented last year, which is the 12,000 sows project, that is, a mega factory of 12,000 sows each, reproducing pigs to export to China in a pandemic context.”
SOT, Flavia Broffoni, Extinction Rebellion activist (Spanish): “It implies a model of absolute cruelty towards, in this case, almost nine million pigs, which is the aspiration to the productivity that this implies, which above all implies generating antimicrobial resistance, that is, new bacteria and new viruses with zoonotic potential. Potential to jump from nonhuman animals towards human animals generating new pandemics.”
SOT, Jessica Gentile, Member of Ecosocialist Network (Spanish): “More land clearing, more soybeans, more expansion of the soybean border to feed hundreds of tens of thousands of pigs in the service of producing them in Argentina for export. The effects are devastating, we are talking about an ecocide in progress and in the context of the climate crisis, the water crisis and global warming It is suicide to all the communities that are in this country.”
