Argentina: Thousands demand judicial reform outside Supreme Court

Thousands of protesters rallied outside the Argentine Supreme Court, in Buenos Aires, on Tuesday, to demand reforms to the judicial system and changes to the Supreme Court.
Protesters, including trade representatives, such as the CTA, waving Argentine flags and animating giant puppets.
The demonstrators are demanding that judges investigate recent allegations of state espionage against leading politicians and trade unionists, allegedly organised under the government of former centre-right President Mauricio Macri (2015-2019).
A reform package that would be further debated by Congress in the summer included the creation of new courts to redistribute cases and reduce the influence of the 12 federal courts that investigate the most politically sensitive cases, as well as the creation of a “Tribunal de Garantías” (“Court of Guarantees”) that would limit the Supreme Court to constitutional issues.

SOT, Lydia Magni, Protester (Spanish): “Right now they are dedicated to persecuting hungry people, people who steal perhaps to eat, but those who steal from us because we can not eat do not do anything to them.”

SOT, Juan Ramos Padilla, Judge and protest promoter (Spanish): “Do not come running with us and change the Supreme Court of Justice, because if we want to reform a judiciary, it has to be without criminals, enough of the courthouse, the Courts, enough of your Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen, supreme.”
