Argentina: Thousands face power outages in Buenos Aires amid heatwave

Thousands of households and shops faced power outages in Buenos Aires on Tuesday amid an intense heatwave.
Temperatures rose to more than 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in the capital, leading to a surge of demand in energy to cool shops and homes.
People could be seen enjoying the weather, while many shops were forced to close or turn to alternative energy sources such as generators.
“We are tired of power outages because they do not let us work in peace, we have to pay taxes, and for that, they do not give us even a day,” said a shop owner.
Around 700,000 people were reportedly affected by the power outages, with the extreme weather set to continue throughout the upcoming week.

SOT, Marina Tomioso (Spanish): “Heatwave is synonymous with power outage. It is impossible to live like this above 40 degrees Celsius heat in a city by the river, where humidity does its thing too. Businesses are paralysed. I just came from the pharmacy, it has no system, you cannot buy medication.”

SOT, Hernan Gimenez (Spanish): “We are tired of power outages because they do not let us work in peace, we have to pay taxes and for that they do not give us even a day.”
