Argentina: Thousands of trucks remain stranded at Chilean border as backlog grows

Around 3,000 lorries remain stuck at the Chilean border in Argentina’s Mendoza, reportedly due to COVID-19-related restriction measures, demanding that lorry drivers get tested at the border in addition to a negative PCR test to enter the country. The backlog at the border is feared to increase as a resolution to the situation has yet to be found.

Lorry drivers from across Latin America, including Argentina, Bolivia, and Brazil, can be seen in footage filmed on Friday, as they wait for the Chilean authorities to find a way to increase testing capacity in order to increase the influx of vehicles. Neighbouring nations including Bolivia and Argentina, have reportedly offered support to Chile in processing the required tests. Those stranded shared their views on the situation.

“It hurts me because it’s 12 days and it’s a long time, I’d like to be home and not travel here anymore, it’s very bad for my future economy, the conflict here is the RCP who want to do it to all the trucks and don’t want those that are made in Argentina,” said Cesar Bekers from Argentina, while another man, Oscar Castaneda, claimed that he was forced by police to quarantine despite a negative test.

“We know that this is not feasible for anyone, in itself it affects us as a carrier and also companies and I believe that it also affects the consumer at the destination a lot,” concluded Hugo Rivas from Mendoza.
