Protests were held against the Argentine government’s decision to authorise offshore exploration for the extraction of oil in the Argentine Sea. The protests filmed were held in coastal city, Mar del Plata, on Wednesday, while similar protests were held in 20 towns and cities across the country.
Thousands of protesters in Mar del Plata marched through the streets carrying banners, chanting slogans and taking part in performance pieces all criticising the government move.
Activist Jasmine Sappho explained the issues she has with the deal. “From where we look at it there is nothing beneficial since companies bring their own employees and once they finish the oil extraction the city is devastated, touristically, the biodiversity that our seas also live,” Sappho stated at the protest.
The government has authorised a number of foreign oil companies to engage in offshore oil exploration. Norwegian oil company Equinor was given the green light to carry out seismic exploration studies in three offshore areas located on the Buenos Aires coast, a joint effort with oil tycoons YPF and Shell. A move that has been widely criticised by environmentalists and activists.
