Specialised teams helped save two humpback whales unusually stranded on the beach of Lucila del Mar on Tuesday, 220 miles (360 kilometres) south of Buenos Aires.

Footage reveals one of the whales, a male of 28 feet (8.5 metres) long and weighing approximately seven tons, trying to be lifted with a crane off the sand with the help of several different teams, including volunteer firefighters, lifeguards, the Civil Defense and members of the Bureau of Sustainable Development and Environment.

Several complicated manoeuvres were needed before successfully helping the whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) safely into the water.

Local reports state that neighbours of the seaside resort town warned the Marine World Foundation of the unusual stranding.
