Hundreds of construction workers marched again through the streets of Melbourne on Tuesday to protest against the imposition of mandatory vaccinations at work sites.

Police were ready and waiting in the morning as hundreds of protesters gathered on the corner of Elizabeth Street in an apparent follow-up to protests on Monday that turned violent.

Protesters walked around the CBD and ended up back at the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) building. They later headed to the Westgate freeway causing huge traffic delays around the city as they walked onto the West Gate Bridge amid traffic. A heavy police presence was visible on the streets of the Victorian capital.

The state government’s recent decision makes it mandatory for construction workers to have at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine to work starting Friday, September 25, following over 300 cases of coronavirus at worksites in Melbourne amid the spread of the Delta variant.

Victoria’s state government has announced a partial shut down of the construction industry in the state in part as a reaction to the violence on Monday, and give time for workers to meet the vaccine requirement.
