Australia: Tesla Megapack catches fire at giant battery facility in Victoria

Firefighters worked until the late-night hours to extinguish a fire at one of the world’s largest battery facilities near Geelong, in the southern state of Victoria on Friday, after a Tesla Megapack burst up in flames.

The fire broke out around 10 AM local time (02:00 GMT) during a test of a Tesla megapack battery and burnt throughout the night, spreading from a 13-tonne lithium battery to a battery bank stored nearby.

The Country Fire Authority as well as Fire Rescue Victoria were sent to the site to extinguish the toxic blaze. Reportedly the fire has been contained and will be further monitored.

The giant Tesla battery was built in Moorabool, a rural area of Geelong, as part of the Victorian government’s project to transition to renewable energy.
