1,000 merino sheep and 100 red goats crossed Madrid on Sunday on the Festival of Transhumance.

The mayor of Madrid, Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, received the cattle and shepherds in front of the City Hall in Cibeles Square, before the shepherds symbolically paid the 50 maravedis (old Iberian currency) stipulated by the agreement reached in 1418, as the price for their cattle to use of the route across the Spanish capital.

The tradition, which was suspended in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, commemorates the law that protects Spain’s livestock routes and the transit of herds from one place to another.

SOT, Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, Mayor of Madrid (Spanish): “Me, Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, Mayor of Madrid, welcome you to this City Council, ladies and gentlemen, shepherds of the Royal Council of the Mesta.”

SOT, Jesus Garzon, President of Mesta Council (Spanish): “In faithful and loyal fulfilment of our old agreements and in payment of the established service, I give you in this act the amount of 50 maravedis as payment for a herd of a thousand merino sheep and 100 red goats that have just crossed Madrid through this route across Puerta del Sol.”

SOT, Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, Mayor of Madrid (Spanish): “I confirm that I received 50 maravedis per thousand sheep.”
