Bait dog discovers love and happiness for the first time

Poppy was initially found as part of a dogfighting ring with about 20 other dogs during a drug bust where the dogfighting ring was uncovered.

Poppy was used as a bait dog, which means he was used as bait to train the fighting dogs. He was taken to the nearest shelter, which is Marion County Animal Shelter in rural Kentucky. And something about his personality just stuck with the staff and they decided to reach out to rescues and a rescue called Pit Bulls of St. Francis stepped up.

A foster family in Tennessee took him in for several months while had surgery to remove an eye that was was bulging and painful and he couldn’t see out of it. And he also had a hole
in the top of his mouth that went into his sinus cavity. So he has had a lot of surgeries,
but he remains a very happy dog.

Today Poppy lives a life of luxury if I do say so. He gets a lot of love. His favorite thing is
snuggling with people. We did take him through training, which has helped a lot. It’s given him a lot of confidence and helped us work on his behavioral issues. He definitely still has some trauma. So we do have to be careful meeting new dogs and meeting new people.

He has come such a long way and he continues to improve. And overall he’s a very happy guy these days. I think Poppy is proof that pit bulls are not a bad breed and that rehabilitation is possible. Every day is tongue out Tuesday. It is work and it’s an investment, but the payout is huge.
