Israeli forces used tear gas, stun grenades, and water cannons to disperse hundreds of Bedouin protesters during a rally against a controversial forestation project in the Negev Desert, as seen in the Negev village of Sawe al-Atrash on Thursday, on the third day of protests.
According to local sources, demonstrators blocked the Route 31 highway near Sawe al-Atrash, and some threw rocks at officers.
“Our demands are well-known to everyone, the recognition of all unrecognized villages. On the top of the list are the six villages in the Naqa’ Beersheba and the Beersheba Naqa area in general,” said a Bedouin protester.
At least 12 protesters were reportedly hurt during the clashes, and three were transferred to a local hospital for treatment.
According to the police, 13 people were arrested during Thursday’s protest.

SOT, Huda abu Obaid, Bedouin activist (Arabic): “What actually happened is as follows, people were demonstrating and at a certain point they closed the street, the police chief called the people through the microphone demanding them to clear the street in order to open the road, and after he finished spelling his sentence, the police immediately started beating people violently and using sound and gas bombs and wastewater against them.”

We also we demand the recognition of the ownership of land by the Palestinian Bedouin residents of the Negev, who owned their land before the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.”

SOT, Atiya al-Asem, Chairman of Committee of unrecognized villages in the Negev (Arabic): “This demonstration came after the entry of “Caracal” tractors and after they confiscated land in the village of al-Atrash, where the confrontations lasted for three days, and it was a clear attack by the police against children, women and men, which angered the people throughout the Negev.”
