Donations for flood victims poured in from across the Belgian capital on Friday, with local residents dropping off a variety of items outside the headquarters of real estate agency Gestea.
Severe flooding has affected several provinces of Belgium, and in particular Liege, where the death toll has risen to 23, according to Belgian media.
Gestea employees decided to provide apartments to those who lost or temporarily lost their homes and organised a collection to assist flood victims.
“Yesterday in the evening we had the idea to organise a collection. And already at nine in the morning we had an enormous amount of people that came to deposit, as you can see, a lot of things,” said Ophelie Comeliau, head of human resources at the real estate agency.
“We are very surprised. And it’s very nice, and it’s very reassuring that people mobilised and to see that people are reactive when their help is needed,” she added.
Donations have included home furnishings, food, clothing and hygiene products.
“I’ve brought everything such as biscuits, rice, pasta, as well as some soap, and other hygiene products,” said one local resident.
The province of Liege has been largely submersed with floodwater following heavy rainfall since Thursday. The deal toll in Liege is expected to rise as rescue efforts continued throughout Friday.
