European equality commissioner Helena Dalli has called for a ‘comprehensive response’ from EU member states to the rise of violent right-wing extremism, racism, and xenophobia, during a European Parliament plenary session held in Brussels on Wednesday.
Dalli slammed the storming of a trade union confederation in Rome earlier that month by extreme-right political party Forza Nuova, which she described as a ‘neofascist group.’
Stating that violent hatred and intolerance are no longer limited to ‘dark corners of the web’ and ‘inner circles of clandestine organisations’, the equality commissioner warned of the risks of extremist ideologies culminating in ‘public violence’ and ‘undermining democracy.
“I firmly believe that if we are to uphold our fundamental EU values and apply the fundamental rights enshrined in the charter we need a prompt and comprehensive response to the rise of violent extremism, as well as racism and xenophobia,” said Dalli.
To combat the rise of right-wing extremist ideology, Dalli announced several measures to be implemented by the EU commission. These measures will include a new regulation requiring that online terrorist content be removed within an hour of an EU member state lodging a removal order, as well as plans to agree on a common and non-legally binding definition of what constitutes right-wing extremism.
SOT, Helena Dalli, European Commissioner for Equality: “Recently, violent, right-wing extremist groups have also used COVID-related conspiracy theories and disinformation to incite violence. In Rome on the 9th of October, a neo-fascist group used a demonstration against COVID-related measures to unleash chaos on the city and attack the headquarters of a trade union confederation.” *MULTIPLE SHOTS AT SOURCE*
SOT, Helena Dalli, European Commissioner for Equality: “Hatred, violence, and intolerance are not only hiding in the dark corners of the web or in the inner circles of clandestine organisations. They have become more and more mainstream and risk [erupting] in public violence and [undermining] the stability of our democracies.”

SOT, Helena Dalli, European Commissioner for Equality: “This commission decided to tackle these issues openly and on all fronts. From a legislative perspective, the terrorist content online regulation will oblige internet service providers to remove all forms of terrorist content within one hour from having received a removal order by an EU member state, while making sure fundamental rights are respected.” *MULTIPLE SHOTS AT SOURCE*
SOT, Helena Dalli, European Commissioner for Equality: “The commission is also working with member states to agree on a common, non-legally binding working definition of violent right-wing extremism to facilitate the identification and information sharing about the phenomenon.”
SOT, Helena Dalli, European Commissioner for Equality: “We often observe a continuum between the spread of hate speech or hateful conspiracies circulating online and episodes of violence or hate crime inspired by right-wing extremist ideologies.” *MULTIPLE SHOTS AT SOURCE*
SOT, Helena Dalli, European Commissioner for Equality: “Racist and xenophobic hate speech is illegal according to EU law. The commission is seeing to the proper transposition and implementation of this legislation through dialogue with member states and well-needed starting infringement procedures.” *MULTIPLE SHOTS AT SOURCE*
