Belgium: Europe unveils 300 billion euro solution to global investment

European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen announced a 300 billion euro ‘roadmap’ to be invested by 2027, focusing on green and digital projects, speaking at a Brussels press conference on Wednesday.

The new scheme, called Global Gateway, aims to develop nations’ health, climate solutions, education, and transport networks.

“Global Gateway will mobilise 300 billion until 2027, it will invest around the world to support our priorities that are the green and the digital transition,” von der Leyen said.

Von der Leyen also made note that this was an alternative for developing nations than to sign up for China’s China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

“Companies made their experience with the Chinese investment. As I said, they need better and different offers. We have been around a lot already and they have the experience with us too, ” the EU commission president said.

The Global Gateway initiative will also aim to strengthen the EUs supply chains and create new trade linkages.
