Protesters clashed with police in Brussels on Sunday, after a demonstration against the government’s COVID-19 measures turned violent.

Protesters threw stones and fireworks at police, facing tear gas and water cannons in return. The incident started out after a few thousand protesters marched peacefully through the city centre of the Belgian capital. In the EU quarter, a group of protesters reportedly started to throw stones at the police.

The demo came after the government announced new anti-COVID measures on Friday, including mandatory mask wearing for primary school children and a lengthening of the school holidays; in addition to the obligation to present COVID-19 passes in order to access bars and restaurants, which was introduced in October.
