European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed a new package of sanctions in Brussels on Tuesday over Russia’s recognition of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s republics.

“Russia has manufactured this crisis and is responsible for the current escalation,” she said, adding that the EU “will quickly finalise a sanction package” that “directly targets” banks and individuals and companies “involved in these actions” against Ukraine’s sovereignty.

The EU is also suspending trade with the breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine, she added.

Von der Leyen also supported the German government’s decision to halt the licensing process for the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. According to her, the future lies in renewable energies.

On Monday Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree confirming Moscow’s official recognition of the sovereignty of the self-proclaimed Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR) and Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) in Ukraine’s east. Putin also ordered Russian troops to ‘maintain the peace’ in the breakaway regions.
