US President Joe Biden met Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday for their first face to face meeting in a year.

Similar protests, against China’s policies in Hong Kong, Tibet and Xinjiang, or its stance towards Taiwan, would not be permitted in China.

Biden hoped his meeting would help stabilise relations between the two nations, which have been at a historic low.

Over the last few years the two superpowers have clashed over issues such as trade policy, sovereignty in the South China Sea and the war in Ukraine.

Before the meeting US officials played down expectations of making much progress on these more divisive issues.

But Biden hoped to ‘normalise’ relations with China by creating and repairing diplomatic and military back-channels.

In this respect, Biden claimed the meeting has been a resounding success.

Xi Jinping also indicated his country was willing to increase cooperation and improve diplomatic relations.

Despite the ‘dictator’ comment and the public protests, it is widely believed the meeting signalled a thaw in US-China relations.
