Bodycam footage shows officer tasing, putting knee to neck of Pelicans' Jaxson Hayes during arrest

Bodycam footage released on Friday by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) showed New Orleans Pelicans player Jaxson Hayes being forcefully arrested at his home in Woodland Hills.
An officer could be heard ordering Hayes to stop resisting, threatening to tase him, while he restrained the NBA player with a knee to his neck, prompting Hayes to shout, “I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe.”

The officer then appeared to lift his knee off Hayes’ neck, to which Hayes seemed to respond, “I’m a blessed soul,” before being tased.

It has been reported that the LAPD were called to Hayes’ residence after receiving a call from his girlfriend’s cousin, who alleged that Hayes’ girlfriend had been sending text messages saying he had become loud and violent.

Hayes could be seen on the footage becoming argumentative with officers, leading to a struggle as the police tried to subdue him, with Hayes later being jailed for resisting arrest.

The LAPD’s Force Investigation Division has announced that the case is being looked in to due to the possibility of force being applied to Hayes’ neck during the stand-off.

The investigation comes two months after ex-officer Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22.5 years for the murder of George Floyd in 2020, who died after Chauvin pressed a knee to his neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds during an arrest.
