Bolivia: Clashes as coca growers take over Adepcoca market

A group of coca farmers clashed with the police as they took over the headquarters of the Departmental Association of Coca Leaf Producers (Adepcoca) as well as the Adepcoca market in La Paz, Monday.
The confrontation reportedly lasted for more than an hour and a half. While the police forces deployed tear gas, the coca growers responded by throwing explosives and stones causing the police line to retreat to a nearby plaza.
The farmers from the Yunga region are battling for control over the leadership of the Adepcoca, an administrative body that is in charge of the market of coca leaves.
While the head of Adepcoca Arnold Alanes blames his ambition to fight corruption in the business for the unrest, opponent coca workers accuse the agency of not taking care of the farmers’ hardships.
The coca plant is the raw ingredient for the drug cocaine but is also used as medicine against the effects of altitude.
