Hundreds of coca leaf growers took part in the so-called ‘acullico’ ritual in La Paz on Friday chewing of the plant, highlighting its traditional and medical use.
While performing traditional dances and songs, they spread the leaves on “aguayos”, the indigenous Andean textiles, laid out on the floor in order to share them with the attendees, surrounded by large bags full of the plant.
Coca leaf consumption has been enshrined in Bolivia’s life in its traditional forms, acullico and medicinal infusions, and has been defended as a legitimate cultural practice.
SOT, Petrona Gimenes, Coca producer (Spanish): “The Acullico gives us encouragement to do the coca work, for the harvest, for the chonteo, to work in the field.”
SOT, Petrona Gimenes, Coca producer (Spanish): “Our life God has given us [inaudible]. Thanks to this coca we live in the Yungas, thanks to this coca we make our children study, we make professionals. If we didn’t have coca, we would be nothing in the Yungas.”
SOT, Julian Condori, Coca producer (Spanish): “Right now we are doing a ‘Jach’a Akulli’ to be able to show our country and the whole world the work that is done in our place of origin, which is what it is, the Yungas of La Paz.”
