Flash flooding in the Sarajevo region has led to evacuations and power cuts, as seen on Saturday.
Fields and local villages appeared submerged by the floodwater, which was caused by heavy rain.
“It was very dangerous yesterday. The river Zeljeznica came close to the houses. I have never seen a river so big in my whole life,” said Kijevo village resident Karic Mustafa, stating that flooding inside his house reached heights of 1.3 metres.
On Friday, energy supplier Elektroprijenos announced that several of its grids had been affected by the flooding, leading to power outages in Sarajevo city.
Hundreds of residents along the banks of the river Bosnia, Tilava, and Zeljeznica were also reportedly evacuated due to the heavy downpour.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Karic Mustafa, Kijevo village resident (Bosnian): “It was very dangerous yesterday. The river Zeljeznica came close to the houses. I have never seen a river so big in my whole life. Mine and my neighbour’s houses were in danger. My house was flooded by waters as high as 1.3 metres . Water poured into the rooms.”
SOT, Sasa Klepic, ‘Wolf’ rescue team (Serbian): “We were happy after we finished the action last night. It is dangerous. We have certificates and we are trained in wild water rescue, so for us it is a routine job. But each action is specific. It is important to make a plan of action and then everyone will be safe.”
