Brazil: Amateur goalie racks up steady online following through posting of heroic saves

TikTok-hero and amateur goalkeeper Joao Victor Nunes showed off his interceptive skills during a friendly game organised in the city of Belem on Thursday.
The player has been building up his online presence by posting videos of impressive saves across his social media profiles, both on Instagram and TikTok, where he can be found under the ‘@osepjvictor’ handle.
“I’ve been playing football like this for five or six years. And I’ve been recording it, taking it seriously, only for about four [years]. Before it was just for fun, but then I decided to take it more seriously after I realised I could gain something from it,” Joao Victor said.
As of Tuesday, Nunes had racked up over 220,000 ‘followers’ and 3.6 million ‘likes’ on his Tiktok account, with many videos having been seen tens of thousands of times.
One particularly striking video shows Nunes protecting the goal at all costs, with a number of consecutive saves achieved in a short time period, and the video achieving a viewership of over 1.1 million.

However I always played well, first in futsal and also handball, so I wanted to register [the saves] for myself, then when I realised the saves were good, I thought why not publishing them? Why not shot to other people so they could see with their mobile phones, because the important thing is to produce good content, I wanted to stimulate people into doing so. That’s my main goal.”

SOT, Joao Victor, Amateur goalkeeper (Portuguese): “I played from Sunday to Sunday, only not on Friday because my body can’t take it, but from Sunday to Thursday I’m playing.”

SOT, Joao Victor, Amateur goalkeeper (Portuguese): “Most of the people look at my body type, short and chubby, and think ‘good, today I will have some fun and score a lot of goals,’ but it doesn’t go like this. I can compensate the lack of height with a lot of dedication.”

SOT, Joao Victor, Amateur goalkeeper (Portuguese): “I think of [playing] until when my body allows it, because I have some knee and ankle problems. I’m heavy, so sometimes my ankle doesn’t take it so well, sometimes it hurts a lot, but I’ll play until my body allows it. If it allows me to play until I’m old, I’ll be making saves as an elderly, and that’s it.”
