Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro was hospitalised in Sao Paulo on Monday morning with suspicion of new intestinal obstruction.

Bolsonaro was taken to the Vila Nova Star Hospital in the South of the city after arriving by plane from Santa Catarina, where he had spent the year-end holidays.

Attending physician Antonio Luiz Macedo, who had treated Bolsonaro for intestinal obstruction in mid-July, told a local news outlet that the president would undergo several tests, including computed tomography, to examine the possible intestinal obstruction.

After the 66-year-old was stabbed in the stomach during the 2018 presidential election campaign, he had to undergo several operations in connection with the attack, which made him more susceptible to intestinal diseases.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Ricardo, Resident (Portuguese): “Passing by here I noticed a movement and learned that the President is hospitalised. It must surely be a routine examination due to what happened to him in the past, this must have affected him somehow but he must be doing some routine exams as everyone does, understand? It’s not something that represents the end of the world.”

SOT, Caique, Resident (Portuguese): “The president’s situation today is very complicated, isn’t it? Here in the region, he’s already been hospitalised three or four times here, right? And always for the same case, which I think is the stab in his stomach, which, if I’m not mistaken, he took it, always with the same little problem, but it seems it was really serious, it ended up worsening the guy’s situation.”

SOT, Elso, Resident (Portuguese): “I live nearby and we are following it because I learned this morning about Bolsonaro’s hospitalisation. I believe it is not so serious because otherwise, he would be undergoing some surgery, something like that, and he’s waiting for the doctor that, as far as I’ve heard, the doctor is in the Bahamas and the presidential plane went to pick him up to bring him here, so, I think maybe, it’s serious to medium. Otherwise, they wouldn’t get the doctor and I hope he recovers. I’m not a strong voter for him, but I think it’s very bad for the country, an instability.”
